The afternoon slump: why office snacks matter more than you think
Share
It’s half past two. The meeting that was meant to take thirty minutes is heading into its second hour. Someone’s yawning, someone’s scrolling their phone, and there’s a queue at the vending machine in the kitchen.
Every office knows the afternoon slump. Most deal with it through coffee.
What the numbers say
In 2012, American researchers analysed questionnaires from almost 20,000 employees at three large companies. They wanted to know how lifestyle relates to how people function at work. The study was published in the journal Population Health Management.
The result: people with an unhealthy diet were 66% more likely to report a drop in productivity at work. Among those who rarely ate fruit and vegetables at work, the figure was as high as 93%.
It’s a questionnaire study, so it shows an association, not direct cause and effect. But the direction is clear: what people eat at work shows up in their work.
One office’s story
Lucie is the office manager at a busy marketing agency. Mornings are non-stop: meetings, emails, presentations. But every afternoon she saw the same thing. The team slowed down, the mood dipped, heads seemed to switch off.
“After lunch we were in limbo,” Lucie remembers. “People kept going for cola and biscuits, and it still didn’t help.”
One day she ordered gfBars and left them in the kitchen next to the coffee machine, where the biscuits used to be. “I’d never have believed how much difference something so small could make,” she says today.
